Archaic wooden statue of a standing figure, hands resting on hips. The face has geometric features: almond-shaped eyes, straight nose extending the sagittal crest, lippish mouth framed by nostrils and prominent beard. An iron, extended by a small bayonet, is attached to the top of the cra^ne. The sculpture, visibly hermaphroditic, features a generous chest, a rounded abdomen and short legs. The cracked surface testifies to the great age of this work, as well as to its prolonged use.
The Nongom style flourished around the village of Yayé, south of the Bandiagara cliffs, between the 15th and 17th centuries (see Leloup, 1994).
