COLLECTION MONSIEUR X. Igbo statue Nigeria Wood H. 57 cm Provenance : Galerie Pierre Robin, Paris Collection Monsieur X. This statue of a young woman in hieratic nudity - standing, arms folded and hands open to the sky as if receiving an offering - certainly comes from one of the many altars or temples where the Igbo honored their tutelary deities under the name of alusi. Our example stands out for its remarkable headdress, composed of four hanging braids, and the wild expression on its face. The rich, contrasting patina and marked erosion of the surface bear witness to the sculpture's age.
