[Proust Marcel] Blanche (Jacques-Émile) - Lot 37
[Proust Marcel] Blanche (Jacques-Émile) Photograph by Jacques-Émile Blanche dedicated to Marcel Proust. Laminated photograph on cardboard (Otto) (vintage albumen print, business-card size 9.1 x 5.8 cm, mounted on strong cardboard with the photographer's name), 1892. The only photograph of Blanche in the Proust archives, by Otto Wegener, dedicated "to his young friend Proust", when he painted the famous portrait of the writer now in the Musée d'Orsay. Famous original photograph by Otto [Wegener]), dedicated at the bottom: "J. E. Blanche à / son jeune ami Proust / 92", this being the year in which Blanche painted the one and only now-famous oil portrait of Proust. No other photographs of Blanche were to be found in the Marcel Proust archives, which were kept by the family for over a century. Blanche and Proust met in the 1880s in Auteuil, where the painter played the role of elder, as the slightly condescending dedication shows. Provenance : - Marcel Proust. Exhibition: - Bibliothèque nationale de France, Marcel Proust, l'écriture et les arts, November 9, 1999-February 6, 2000 (catalog no. 172A).
