Louÿs (Pierre) - Lot 52
Louÿs (Pierre)
Unpublished file on pleasure and sex in women. Circa 1900. Reunion of 4 unpublished manuscript folders (147 pages) respectively 46 (Manuel d'érotographie comparée), 32 (Vocabulaire des métaphores et des épithètes qui désignent et qualifient les parties sexuelles de la femme), 16 (Notes sur la femme arabe) and 29 pages (L'amour lesbien, étude historique et ethnographique), and 24 pages of other documents (various formats), cardboard cover adorned with a label where the author has drawn a female symbol. Protective box by Devauchelle.
Important set of projects in various stages of elaboration, including the detailed plan of a Manuel d'érotographie comparée and a study of the physiology of voluptuousness in different types of women (the tribad, the lesbian, the bestial, the sadistic, the phallomaniac, the fellatrice, the ordurière, the cerebral, etc.), the Métaphores de la volupté, and a book on the physiology of voluptuousness in women (the tribad, the lesbian, the bestial, the sadistic, the phallomaniac, the fellatrice, the ordurière, the cerebral, etc.).), the Métaphores et épithètes (metaphors and epithets) that designate and qualify women's sexual parts, with correspondences of female sexual vocabulary in Spanish, Caribbean, Italian and Abyssinian, notes on the Arab woman and love, a Étude historique et ethnographique sur l'amour lesbien (historical and ethnographic study of lesbian love), and other documents.
Pierre Louÿs (1870-1925) wrote: "I think only with pen in hand", and his written output, still largely unpublished, is impressive, especially in the field of literary studies. He was as much a researcher as a poet, never dissociating these two facets. Jean-Paul Goujon recalls the vertigo that the mass of documents found at his home on his death must have caused those who discovered it, and the often hasty and disorderly dispersal that followed.
This imposing, previously unpublished dossier demonstrates Pierre Louÿs' scrupulous analytical method and incomparable erudition in all matters relating to female sex and eroticism, in a unique style combining typology, science, humor and poetry. The quasi-ethnological lists of different types of women, classified according to their tastes or sexual deviances, have a surrealist quality.
Provenance: Pierre Louÿs.
