Louÿs (Pierre) - Lot 53
Louÿs (Pierre) Ɵ Histoires de Dames, unpublished manuscript. Circa 1900. Manuscript file of 75 pages (21 x 17 cm). Protective box from Devauchelle. Unpublished, already highly accomplished project for a study of female eroticism in 16th- and 17th-century literature, including chapters on tribadie in Pierre de l'Estoile's La Frigarelle, on Hélène de Surgères and Diane de Brissac and Le Priapisme des filles, on Lucien's Dialogue translated by Filbert Bretin, on Pontus de Tyard's Élégie pour une Dame, and on Les Parties de la femme (1532). As in the previous batch, Louÿs's erudition imposes itself on the reader, based on texts from the 16th and 17th centuries that have fallen into oblivion, the aim of which was to describe eroticism in women during this period. Louÿs had planned a major study of eroticism in women, for which he gathered a considerable number of documents and notes, but which never saw the light of day. The last part, devoted to the vocabulary of women's sexual parts, is hallucinating in its sapience mingled with fantasy in the choice of terms, such as babole or haleron (for nymphs), barbidaut (for the clitoris), dame du milieu (hymen), or guillevard or gingibert (vagina), with tasty poetic quotations that also make you smile: "Il avait bandé sa ligne equinoctiale, comme s'il eust dire son arbalète naturelle du costé du ponant de sa chere espouse"... Provenance: Pierre Louÿs.
