[Apollinaire (Guillaume)] - Lot 68
[Apollinaire (Guillaume)]
Apollinaire's coffee pot, from 202 boulevard Saint-Germain.
This ceramic coffee pot was the one used by Apollinaire until his death in his apartment at 202 boulevard Saint-Germain, for his friends and himself.
It is in brown ceramic, with two bodies and a missing lid (height approx. 20 cm). Attached to the bottom is the label of the dispersal of the Ancienne Collection Guillaume Apollinaire, here at the third vacation. The apartment at 202 boulevard Saint-Germain, where Apollinaire died on November 9, 1918, was piously preserved by his wife Jacqueline. Its sale was spread over thirty years, from 1986 to 2016. The apartment itself was put up for sale at the third auction, in 1993, along with relics such as this coffee pot, the only one in the apartment.
As Michel Décaudin wrote, "November 9, 1918 [...] Apollinaire died in the midst of his paintings, near the African statuettes that 'are Christs of another form and belief', 'the inferior Christs of another belief'. But thanks to Jacqueline, who faithfully preserved him, his apartment lived on, and there are many of us who, tugging at the cord's fringed tassel, had the unsettling impression that the poet was watching us and was about to appear in the doorway".
Provenance: Former Guillaume Apollinaire collection.
