Janco (Marcel) - Lot 70
Janco (Marcel) Ɵ Unpublished wood for Mr. Antipyrine's La Première Aventure céleste [sic]. 1916 (28.5 x 19.5 cm). Exceptional unrecorded woodblock project for the first Dada book in a single signed and dated edition, from Michel Seuphor. This woodcut by Marcel Janco was printed as a single edition project for the first Dada book, La Première Aventure céleste de Mr. Antipyrine (28.5 x 19.5 cm, signed and dated 1916 in graphite, with annotations on the back), but was ultimately unused. Only the central part of the wood was retained for the book's third engraving, the rest being discarded by Janco for the illustration. Janco later offered this unique print to Michel Seuphor. This woodcut was unknown until 2017 (Michel Seuphor sale) and does not appear in Ilk's catalog raisonné. It remains a unique witness to the very first attempts at printmaking in the Dada movement, and provides valuable information on how the woodblocks for the first Dada book were conceived and produced. Provenance: Michel Seuphor (Michel Seuphor, une vie dans l'avant-garde, Drouot / Leclere, November 10, 2017, no. 8).
