Férat (Serge) - Lot 72
Férat (Serge)
Ɵ Original cubist composition on the cover of Nord-Sud. 1917 (17.2 x 13 cm).
Original monogrammed cubist composition by Serge Férat (ink, white and blue gouache, and collage with fragment of postage stamp) done as a large medallion on the cover of the first issue of Nord-Sud.
This composition (29 x 19 cm), monogrammed "S. F." at bottom center, was used on the cover of Nord-Sud, the magazine founded by Pierre Reverdy in March 1917. This issue contains Paul Dermée's famous manifesto Quand le symbolisme fut mort and Pierre Reverdy's article Sur le cubisme, alongside contributions from Guillaume Apollinaire and Max Jacob.
Ukrainian Serge Jastrebzoff (1881-1958) was "renamed" Serge Férat by Apollinaire, whom he nursed at the Italian Hospital after his wound in 1916. A relative of the Baroness d'Oettingen, with whom he had arrived in Paris, he contributed with her to the production of Les Mamelles de Tirésias in June 1917 at the Maubel Conservatory.
Provenance: Former Pierre-Marcel Adéma collection; Jean-Yves Lacroix bookshop, Paris, 2017 Christmas catalog, no. 254.
