Gauguin (Paul) - Lot 80
Gauguin (Paul)
Ɵ Before and After. With the twenty-seven drawings from the original manuscript. Éditions G. Crès & Cie, Paris, 1923. Cover printed in ochre by George Daniel de Monfreid inspired by Gauguin (23 x 14.5 cm).
Original blue-green calf binding embossed in gold with a Marquesan décor (on the first cover) and a Marquesan head (on the second cover), drawn and engraved on plates by George Daniel de Monfreid after motifs by Paul Gauguin (gold head, untrimmed, covers and spine preserved).
One of Monfreid's two known bindings inspired by the works of his friend, specially commissioned by publisher Georges Crès, for this work featuring Gauguin's last manuscript.
First printed edition, illustrated with the 27 drawings of the original manuscript. A facsimile edition was first published in Leipzig by Kurt Wolff in 1918 (see lot 55).
The admirable binding of this copy, which corresponds perfectly to Gauguin's book, was made by Monfreid for the publisher Georges Crès, who also had one made in red with the same decoration.
Provenance: Georges Crès.
