Péret (Benjamin)
Dormir dormir dans les pierres. Original signed manuscript complete. Devauchelle slipcase. The only complete, signed manuscript of this major Surrealist work. The manuscript of the book's five poems, signed and with erasures and corrections, is written in blue and black ink on ten numbered sheets of blue paper (in-4°) and heavy cream paper (in-8°). No other complete manuscript of this poetic text is known to exist. Marcel Duhamel's copy contained 2 autograph poems (Bibliothèque d'un Grand Amateur Européen [Julien Bogousslavsky], Christie's, Paris, May 22, 2006, no. 103), and Péret's contained 3 autograph poems, with the beginning of the fourth (Bibliothèque Daniel Filipacchi, première partie, Christie's, Paris, April 29, 2004, no. 170; Paul Destribats, Bibliothèque des Avant-gardes, 1ère partie, tome 1, Christie's, Paris, July 3, 2019, no. 217). This complete manuscript is that of one of the very first illustrated books of Surrealism - Yves Tanguy's first - and one of the first productions (the seventh) of Éditions urréalistes, founded in 1925. It contains some of the rare love poems by Benjamin Péret (1899-1959), in which the themes of sleep, dreams and solitude are interwoven. The work was conceived at 54 rue du Château, where Péret and Yves Tanguy (1900-1955) lived with Marcel Duhamel in a group that also included Prévert, Aragon, Thirion, Malet and Sadoul, in a certain spirit of independence from Breton and realist friction, giving this manuscript a particular flavor. Péret, however, remained Breton's most faithful companion. The poems in the book, which had appeared as a pre-original in Les Cahiers du Sud, were reprinted many years later in Feu central. Provenance: André Breton.
