[Chagall (Marc)] et [Pascin (Jules] - Lot 91
[Chagall (Marc)] et [Pascin (Jules]
Lehel (François). Notre Art Dément. Four studies on pathological art (Les chercheurs - Notre art dément - L'impressionisme pathologique - La démence de Cézanne). J. Povolotzky & Cie, Paris, 1926. 69 illustrations in and out of the text, and two original etchings by Marc Chagall (L'Avarice III, Kornfeld 64) and Julius Pascin (absent from the Hemin/Krohg/Perls/Rambert catalog raisonné) in the first edition. First edition (23.5 x 18.5 cm).
One of the 15 first copies on japon impérial (no. K), exceptionally enriched by an additional edition on chine of the two etchings reserved for the first edition (not reported in Kornfeld).
This curious book, extremely rare in its first edition with engravings by Chagall and Pascin, evokes various artistic subjects, in particular the madness expressed in pictorial works. It includes studies on pathological impressionism and Cézanne's insanity.
Chagall's engraving is another version of one of the engravings printed for The Seven Deadly Sins. It is here in duplicate, the second chine print being unknown in the catalog raisonné of the painter's graphic work.
Provenance: Marcel Lecomte.
