Giraudoux (Jean) Ɵ Stephy. With eight lithographs... - Lot 96 - Giquello
Giraudoux (Jean) Ɵ Stephy. With eight lithographs by Maurice Barraud. Mermod, Lausanne, 1929. First edition (18.8 x 12.8 cm). Binding: parchment binding decorated on the spine with an original drawing by Barraud. One of ten head copies on chine, complete with the handwritten page and the suite entirely watercolored by Barraud, dispatched with original full-page drawing. Numbered VIII and monogrammed in red pencil on the label by Henry-Louis Mermod, the Lausanne patron and publisher who revitalized the illustrated book in Switzerland from the 1920s onwards. The book was printed by Kundig in Geneva. The handwritten page in black ink by Giraudoux, not mentioned in the receipt but included in the ten first copies (often missing because it was inserted as a loose leaf), is signed. An original signed drawing by Barraud on the theme of the book, dedicated to Fritz Kappeler, director of the Aarau museum, has been bound into the copy. Giraudoux's discreetly erotic novel is perfectly served by the lithographic illustrations by Barraud, the "Swiss Matisse", the color suite giving the nudes a particular relief and piquancy. Provenance: Fritz Kappeler.
