Tzara (Tristan) - Lot 98
Tzara (Tristan)
Ɵ L'Homme approximatif. Original manuscript of the eighth song. 8 pp. of text and 1 sheet of drawings. Circa 1927-1930 (21 x 13.5 cm).
Rare first-draft autograph manuscript of the eighth canto of this Surrealist masterpiece, complete and extensively corrected, with a sketch drawn by Tzara.
Protective yellow morocco openwork slipcase.
L'Homme approximatif is one of the greatest texts of epic poetry: that's how Henri Béhar judged it in his edition of the complete works of Tristan Tzara (1896-1963), also speaking of "the first book of abstract poetry". Hubert Juin, in the 1968 reprint, analyzed the text, which "is organized in the manner of a song, really, by the return of verbal groups that are like so many primed refrains", including the famous "Homme approximatif comme moi comme toi lecteur et comme les autres". Although written outside the Surrealist movement, the collection is now one of the major Surrealist texts.
Tzara's drawing, which accompany his autograph draft, is typical of his graphic production, as here it is often interspersed with his handwritten drafts.
Rectfication : only one drawing
Provenance: Louis Marcoussis; Paul Destribats.
