Ramuz (Charles-Ferdinand)
Ɵ Noces. And other stories after the Russian text by Igor Strawinsky. Aux Ides et Calendes, Neuchâtel, 1943. Illustrations by Theodore Strawinsky. First edition (23.2 x 17.4 cm). Binding: Rare publisher's hardcover binding, designed and illustrated in color by Theodore Strawinsky (almost all copies were produced as loose sheets under a soft cover). Nominative first copy on hollande of the most beautiful book associating Ramuz and Strawinsky, with a letter from Ramuz, and all the illustrations enhanced in color. The receipt indicates 12 copies de tête hors commerce, including 5 on japon and 7 on hollande, this one on hollande, not numbered but nominative with the handwritten mention in blue ink: "ex. d'auteur sur hollande Imprimé pour le Professeur Arthur Stoll CF Ramuz Th. Strawinsky". The 18 illustrations by Igor Stravinsky's son, the painter Théodore Strawinsky, were hand-colored for each copy by André Rosselet, under the direction of Richard Heyd, Ramuz's patron and friend, who ran the fledgling publishing house Ides et Calendes. The total print run was 1,022 copies, corresponding to 1,418 hand-colored illustrations, including the cover! Alongside Noces, this original edition of Strawinsky's texts for his musical works, published between 1917 and 1923, includes Priaboutky and Renard. Ramuz's translations were not completed until some twenty years later, giving rise to this luxurious publication a quarter-century after the Lausanne premiere of L'Histoire du Soldat, which in 1918 marked Ramuz and Strawinsky's first collaboration. Provenance: Arthur Stoll.
