The figures of the Apocalypse (f. E6-G2v) are not accompanied by the poems; (IV): 182 emblems, including: the salamander of François I, the triple crescent of Henri II, the porcupine of Louis XII, the Hercules columns of Charles V, the necklace of the Annonciade, the necklace of the Golden Fleece... CONTEMPORARY BINDING. Tan calf, gilt decoration, central diamond pattern and fillets, ribbed spine decorated with a gilt fleur-de-lys in each entrenerfs, gilt edges. PROVENANCE: on the verso of the second cover, 18th-century signature L'encomie, with purchase mention 5 ll -- the blank verso of the last endpaper bears the indication: "ce livre apartiens à moi Jean François Cheviron fait à Dijon le 29 Mai 1803" -- Pierre Berès (1913-2008; Paris, December 17, 2007, no. 29) Fragility at O3, P4, some wetness. Epidermal marks, binding slightly restored. This second edition of the Quadrins historiques is a masterpiece of 16th-century French engraving and the most famous work by Bernard Salomon, known as Le Petit Bernard, from Lyon. The first part deals with Genesis; the second with Exodus and other books of the Old Testament. The work served as inspiration or model for artists such as earthenware makers, enamellers, cabinetmakers and glassmakers, and was reprinted many times, notably in English, Spanish and Italian editions.
