MALVASIA, Carlo Cesare - Lot 43
MALVASIA, Carlo Cesare Le Pitture di Bologna Bologna, Pier-Maria Monti, 1706 A CLASSIC: A SMALL TREATISE ON THE PAINTINGS OF BOLOGNA, BOUND IN CONTEMPORARY VELLUM. Preface and Letters by Giampietro Zanotti in ORIGINAL EDITION In-12 (139 x 79mm) COLLATION: 12 ff. n. ch., 369 pp. CONTEMPORARY BINDING. Vellum, long spine with ink title, blue paper endpapers added over old endpapers PROVENANCE: Marcel Nicolle (1871-1934; handwritten bookplate on one endpaper) Loose binding This edition is by Giampietro Zanotti (1674-1765), who wrote the preface, the letter to the readers, and an extensive index by place, subject and artist. This is why his name has been inscribed by a contemporary hand on the back of this copy. Zanotti was a Bolognese art critic in the direct lineage of Malvasia, known for having founded the Bolognese Academy of Fine Arts, then called the Clementine Academy. Malvasia's Pitture di Bologna was first published during the author's lifetime, in 1686.
