ILLUSTRATION and COLLATION: engraved frontispiece by Jan Granen, a folding plan and 218 engraved plates, 60 pp. of text in French, Latin, Italian and Dutch. ENGLISH BINDING FROM THE FIRST HALF OF THE 18th CENTURY. Red morocco, three gilded fillets, highly ornate ribbed spine with mosaic quatrefoil in black morocco, blue speckled edges. PROVENANCE: John Pennant (bookplate with purchase note dated November 1750 on one of the endpapers) -- George Hay Dawkins Pennant (1764-1840) with his armorial bookplate on the volume's flyleaf -- F. E. J. G. (bookplate) -- Pierre Berès (1913-2008; Paris, November 23, 2010, no. 7). A few small stains, small restored tears in one plate and in the plan. Few chips restored to binding, spine brittle.
