ENGLISH BINDING FROM THE FIRST HALF OF THE 18th CENTURY. Red morocco, three gilded fillets, highly ornate ribbed spine with mosaic quatrefoil in black morocco, blue speckled edges. PROVENANCE: John Pennant (bookplate with purchase note dated November 1750 on one of the endpapers) -- George Hay Dawkins Pennant (1764-1840) with his armorial bookplate on the volume's flyleaf -- F. E. J. G. (bookplate) -- Pierre Berès (1913-2008; Paris, November 23, 2010, no. 7). A few small stains, small restored tears in one plate and in the plan. Few chips restored to binding, spine brittle.
