SCOTTO, Francesco, et Fausto AMIDEI - Lot 54
SCOTTO, Francesco, et Fausto AMIDEI Itinerario d'Italia [Rome], Fausto Amidei, 1737 ONE OF THE BEST GUIDES TO THE "GRAND TOUR". PRINCE PAOLO BORGHESE'S DEDICACY EXEMPLAIRE, GILDED VELIN BINDING, WITH HIS ARMS In-8 (152 x 100 mm). COLLATION: a8 A-Z8 2A-G8 2H10. ILLUSTRATION: a frontispiece and 26 maps showing Italy and city views: general map of Italy, Trento, Venice, Padua, Vicenza, Verona, Brescia, Milan, Parma, Bologna, Florence, Lucca, Livorno, Siena, Civitavecchia, Genoa, Mantua, Ferrara, Urbino, Ancona, Loreto, Rome, Naples, Pozzuolo, Baia and Cumae. CONTEMPORARY BINDING. Vellum, gilt decoration, gilt coat of arms in the center of the boards, gilt fillets and gilt scrolls framing the boards, ornate long spine, repeated coat of arms on the spine, gilt edges. PROVENANCE: Paolo Borghese (1733-1792; arms in the center of the boards and arms on the spine; Catalogue of the Library of S. E. D. Paolo Borghese, Rome, May-June 1892, number 2281). Fold of the plate depicting Civitavecchia (folio P) partially split, not missing. Franciscus Schott or Frans Schott (1548-1622) was the brother of the Antwerp Jesuit and friend of the humanists, Andreas Schott. The Itinerario first appeared in Latin in 1601, and was constantly republished until 1761. The series of "journeys" that it proposes establishes the reader in a wandering, visual logic. From Venice to Naples, cities are described in terms of their history, monuments, relics, inscriptions and medals. Plans and profiles help travelers find their way around. The copy is mentioned in the Catalogue of the Library of H. E. D. Paolo Borghese (Rome, May-June 1892), under number 2281: "In-8, with very fine plates, parch. binding". This edition is dedicated to Paolo Borghese. The Borghese arms stamped on the binding, made around 1750, make this a dedication copy. It probably refers to Paolo Borghese, Principe Aldobrandini (1733-1792). BIBLIOGRAPHY : Brunet, V, col. 235
