First Latin edition, enriched by an Appendix with unpublished plates, of the Latin translation dedicated to Frederick-Augustus II of Saxony, King of Poland. 3 parts in 1 folio volume (360 x 235 mm). Title printed in red and black, 7 initials and 46 culs-de-lampe engraved in intaglio, several signed by Dom Miseroti.
COLLATION: π6 A-Z 2A-Z 3A-G2 H1 either, XII pp. 214 pp.
ILLUSTRATION: 75 copper-engraved plates, 40 full-page and 35 half-page.
19th CENTURY BINDING. Half tan basane with corners, long ornate spine. Without the last blank leaf. Corners dulled, hinges rubbed.
The original edition appeared in Italian in Rome in 1706 under the title : Le Pitture Antiche delle Grotte di Roma... This work retraces the history of Nasonii's tomb. The frescoes on the walls and vaults of the tomb in Via Flaminia were discovered in 1674.
