Ange-Laurent de La Live de July (1725-1779) was one of the greatest connoisseurs of the 18th century. He was the brother of the Comtesse d'Houdetot, Saint-Lambert's mistress and Rousseau's famous correspondent. Through his second marriage in 1762, he also became the brother-in-law of Jean-Joseph de Laborde, court banker and owner of Château de Méréville.
La Live de July was one of Greuze's principal patrons. Her portrait, painted by Greuze, is in the Kress Collection at the National Gallery (Washington). Its description appears in the present Historical Catalogue on page 55. In this work, La Live de July provides a personal commentary on each of his works. The collection was sold in 1770 with a catalog written by Pierre Rémy (Catalogue des tableaux des différentes écoles, des figures, bustes... qui composent le cabinet de M. de La Live de July, Paris, 1769).
