Binding slightly worn, corners dulled, one missing. Shortly before the publication of this work, Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717-1768) had just been appointed Superintendent of Antiquities in Rome. This collection is "Winckelmann's true claim to the admiration of scholars [...] It is here that he establishes the fundamental principles of modern criticism for the interpretation of monuments" (Vinet).
