A PRECIOUS AND SUPERB COPY IN CONTEMPORARY MOROCCO, ON LARGE PAPER, WITH THE TITLE PAGE AND FRONTISPIECE HEIGHTENED IN THE PERIOD IN A VERY FINE COLORING WITH TRACES OF SILVER.

ILLUSTRATION: frontispiece designed by Charles-Nicolas Cochin and engraved by Pierre-Philippe Choffard, 4 plates including 3 fold-outs engraved by Mariette himself, bound after page 195.
ADDED ORIGINAL ILLUSTRATION: ORIGINAL DRAWING by Stefano Della Bella, in gray wash, brown ink and red chalk, placed in the frontispiece (178 x 121mm). The drawing was engraved: Devesme 942
ORNAMENTATION: SUPERB COLORIS D'ÉPOQUE with silver highlights delicately applied to the engraved frontispiece and title page.
ANNOTATIONS: handwritten prices in red ink, with mentions of bidders or successful bidders in brown ink
FOLLOWING: 4-page catalog of two print sales held in 1773, printed by Prault in 1774.
CONTEMPORARY BINDING. Red morocco, gilt decoration, framed fillets, ribbed spine with the words pushed in gold letters in two boxes: "Catalogue de Mariette avec les prix et enlum[iné]".
PROVENANCE OF THE COPY:
Frédéric Reiset (1815-1891, former director of the Musées nationaux; figure on the title; Paris, April 5, 1879 and following days, no. 935, 415 francs, the drawing was then correctly catalogued as by Della Bella. It was Frédéric Reiset who added the drawing -- Pierre Deschamps (1821-1906, bibliographer, small donkey placed as a bookplate on one of the endpapers, numerous notes in his hand in brown ink, the last of which (p. 418) signed with his initials) -- Louis de La Forest, comte d'Armaillé (1823-1882; armorial bookplate) -- by descent, his daughter Pauline de Broglie then his granddaughter Albertine wife of Pierre Louis François de Luppé, marquis de La Grange et de Beaurepaire (1866-1934, chartist; Paris, November 18, 2015, no. 32)
PROVENANCE OF THE DRAWING:
A. Mouriau (first half of the 19th century), former captain in the service of Belgium, collector of antique drawings (Lugt L.1853), small stamp at the bottom of the drawing
