White vellum, speckled edges PROVENANCE : unidentified shelf label on the flyleaf of the volume This is the earliest known description of the frescoes and paintings that adorned the ducal palace of Sassuelo. The author, Giuseppe Fabrizzi, was advisor to the Duke of Modena, president of the University of Modena and of the Academy of Fine Arts and Sciences. In the mid-1630s, Francesco d'Este had the Palazzo Ducale in Sassuolo transformed into an incredible Baroque palace. The decorative program was entrusted to the architect Bartomeo Avanzini and the painter Jean Boulanger, whose frescoes are famous. The great painters of the time also took part in the commission: Angelo Colonna, Le Guerchin, Salvator Rosa, Agostino Mitelli and Ottavio Viviani.
