Baule statue Ivory Coast Wood H. 46 cm Provenance : - Jean-Paul Delcourt, Abidjan - Private collection Important Baule statue of a female figure. Beneath a high, triple-shelled headdress, the masterfully-treated face is part of an ovoid head, with the features concentrated in a slight depression. The bust is elongated, with a generous bust. The flexed legs with their bouncing calves are virtuously sculpted. Note the finesse of the details (digited fingers with detached thumbs, slightly raised scarification marks, slightly protruding shoulder blades, etc.) and the remarkable patina highlighting the rounded volumes and protruding edges. This is a work of exceptional quality, created by a master sculptor at the peak of his art. This sculpture was acquired directly from Jean-Paul Delcourt, a passionate collector and dealer renowned for the quality of his eye.
