Igbo statue Nigeria Terracotta H. 23.5 cm Provenance : - Alain Javelaud Collection Publication: - Collection Alain Javelaud, Galerie Bernard Dulon, 2008, p. 21 The female figure is seated on the ground, legs spread, left hand placed between her thighs, left arm missing. The body is richly adorned, the headdress refined, the facial modeling particularly fine: half-closed eyes, mouth open to well-detailed teeth. Symbolizing the spirit of divination and nature, this type of terracotta sculpture - made exclusively by women - was placed on domestic altars at family or village level.
