Mama Mask - Lot 62
Mama Mask Nigeria Wood H. 48 cm Worn on top of the skull by the dancer, the mask features a conical base onto which a beak is grafted, as well as a kind of spherical cap stretching upwards to form a curved, pointed horn. The beak and horn are criss-crossed on the upper edge. Presence of an old native restoration on the beak, made of metal staples. Reddish patina. This type of mask would have been used in a masquerade called Mangam by various groups in the Mama area. Most of these masks have two horns, the presence of a single central appendage as on our example being extremely rare.
