Yoruba Plateau Nigeria Wood D. 40 cm This type of tray was once used for divination: the priest covered the center with wood dust, invoked the spirits with a wooden or ivory clapper and then threw the palm nuts, ikin, or a chain called opélé onto it. Their position revealed the answer to the question asked. Our example here is adorned with a bas-relief frieze depicting a number of animals in Indian thread - birds, fish, crocodiles, quadrupeds - meeting on either side of a face with half-closed eyes. Superb patina.
