Toma mask - Lot 89
Toma mask Guinea Wood H. 57 cm Beautiful Angbai mask representing a stylized face with a flat face, a rounded forehead decorated with chevron motifs and topped by two pairs of horns, evoking the world of nature. Two small round eyes are located on either side of the nasal bridge, the face left free of any other sign. The mask has no mouth, as is customary, to signify the secretive nature of the poro society in which it evolved. Brought out for initiations that took place in cycles every seven to ten years, Angbai masks could be seen by all, but only a member of the poro could carve, consecrate and wear them.
