Igbo-Izzi mask - Lot 90
Igbo-Izzi mask
Nigeria
Wood
H. 40 cm
Provenance :
- Alain Javelaud Collection
This beautiful ogbodo enyi (spirit of the elephant) mask, carved in heavy wood, combines anthropomorphic and animal features: pachyderm tusks project from the end of the face (one has been previously broken off), occupied at its center by a human nose, while a trunk shoots out from the middle of the forehead. The bold, cubic volumes are punctuated by black, white and red polychrome. At the back of the skull rises a human face known as a ntekpe, which we don't know whether it's a portrait of a notable or a "spirit child".
