Stilettos - Lot 107
Stilettos Marquesas Islands H. 33 cm Provenance : - Private collection, Paris An essential object in Marquesan art, tupuva'e stirrups were attached by coir cords to stilts worn during symbolic jousts. Creating a link between the wearer and the spirit world, their base is invariably supported by a tiki figure. The example studied here features a densely-packed body. The head is adorned with engraved tattoos and a patterned headband. The body and stirrup are covered with a network of fine incisions revealing the nuanced patina of the wood.
