Fork, Bulutoko - Lot 109
Fork, Bulutoko
Fiji
Wood
L. 25,5 cm
Provenance :
- Christie's, July 3, 1990, lot 81
- Private collection
This elegant fork is distinguished by the shape of its handle, composed of a spindle engraved with lines extending into a notched section imitating the prickles of a fruit. The four elegantly curved tines evoke the narrow corolla of a flower.
In Fiji, bulutoko (or iculanibokola) forks were reserved for priests and chiefs, whose hands were not allowed to touch the food.
