Dayak rattan cutting instrument East Borneo, Indonesia Wood and shells H. 26 cm - L. 55 cm Provenance : - Régine and Guy Dulon - Binoche & Giquello, December 16, 2015, lot 130 - Private collection Elegant tool consisting of a quadrangular wooden block attached to a filiform base. A metal blade is attached to the top. The main element is decorated with an Aso head with shell-encrusted eyes. The most important figure in Dayak culture, the Aso is a mythological creature half-dragon, half-dog, meant to protect against malevolent spirits.
