Carved from basalt or greywacke, Maori patu onewa short clubs are the result of a long process of carving and polishing: the formal elegance and admirable texture of the object presented here indicate the technical mastery of its maker.
Proudly preserved and handed down from father to son, these clubs were used as much for parrying as they were for striking, the blow coming from the wearer's shoulder and hitting the opponent's temple.
