Ceremonial ornament Asmat, Irian Jaya, Papua Indonesia Carved wood, pigments and fibers H. 72 cm Provenance: - Ex Lempertz sale, Brussels, April 9, 2019, lot 72 - Ex European private collection, acquired at the above sale Expressive and dynamic, this carved wooden figure is decorated with pigments and fibers. This type of sculpture, reminiscent of a turtle, a symbol of fertility, was the upper part of a ceremonial mask known to the Asmat people as Manama or Manawas. Condition report: Consistent with use and age, some pigment loss, traces of moisture on the torso and legs at pigment level.
