This ceremonial sculpture called Gope (spirit board) is characteristic of the Papuan Gulf styles of southeastern New Guinea. Gope served as intercessors between men and supernatural powers or ancestral spirits. The painted motifs were specific to each clan.
Featuring a stylized, colorful figure, this votive board is reminiscent of works by artists such as Jean Dubuffet and Gaston Chaissac.
