Food bowl Malaita, Solomon Islands Wood, mother-of-pearl, resin L. 58 cm - W. 18 cm This carved wooden bowl adorned with mother-of-pearl inserts features a stylized bonito fish. In the Solomon Islands, this fish is considered the emanation of an important guardian spirit. This type of figurative bowl was used for initiation ceremonies in the bonito society of high-ranking men in the Solomon Islands. The bowls were filled with food and offered to the spirits as part of the initiation. Condition report: Broken top of tail and dorsal fin glued back together. One of the nacres (eye) is cracked. Some pigment loss and surface abrasions, consistent with use and age.
