Mortar with four heads - Lot 24
Mortar with four heads Sepik, Papua New Guinea Carved wood H. 9.5 cm Provenance: Ex Chris Boylan collection, Sydney This mortar from Papua New Guinea features five finely sculpted faces in a style typical of the Lower Sepik region, reminiscent of mask brag figurines. Each head is powerfully expressive. This mortar was used to pound areca nuts before mixing them with lime made from shells and burnt coral to prepare betel. This mixture activated the areca nut's psychotropic properties and produced a stimulating effect when the betel was chewed. Condition report: consistent with use and age, traces of deposits inside the upper bowl attest to the use of this mortar.
