Fish trap - Lot 26
Fish trap
Republic of Kiribati (ex: Gilbert Islands), Micronesia.
Wood and coconut fiber
H. 21 cm - W. 39 cm - D. 24 cm
Provenance: former Australian collection, Melbourne
This house-shaped fish trap is a remarkable piece of basketwork incorporating coconut fibers and wooden sticks.
The use of basketry traps appears to be an ancestral fishing technique in Micronesia. This feeding activity took place close to the coast in calm lagoons. The trap was weighted and immersed. It was attached to a float to indicate its location.
The entrance to the trap is located on one side of the house. This funnel-shaped opening made it easy for fish to enter, but difficult for them to leave.
In the example shown here, the complexity of the assembly and knotting is remarkable.
