Currency exchange Yar Yap, Caroline Islands, Micronesia Mother-of-pearl and coconut fiber H. approx. 33 cm This exchange coin is made of carved mother-of-pearl topped with a fine coconut fiber braid from the Yap Islands in the Carolinas Archipelago of Micronesia. Several types of coins can be found in Yap: large stone discs, shells assembled into necklaces or, as shown here, a Yar coin consisting of a single shell adorned with braided fibers. They were used as dowries, in trade or as compensation for local disputes. Status report : RAS
