Mask - Lot 34
Mask
Highlands region, Papua New Guinea
Pumpkin, seeds and plant fibers
H. 21 cm excluding shell pendants (40 cm with)
This mask, carved from a dried half-squash and adorned with pendants of seeds known as job tears (Coix lacryma-jobi), features two circular holes for the eyes and an additional one for a nostril, while the split mouth opens onto a row of teeth. The mask's expressiveness is underlined by beautiful polychrome motifs.
This mask could have been used in various ceremonial contexts in the Hautes Terres region, and in particular worn by a mourner. See New Guinea, Highlands Art from the Jolika Collection (Friede, Hays & Hellmich, C., de Young Museum, San Francisco p. 245).
Intriguing, poetic and powerful, this mask leaves no one indifferent!
Condition report:
A few chips and broken teeth, some scratches on the pigments in places, but overall good condition.
