Model pirogue - Lot 38
Model pirogue
Vanuatu Archipelago (ex: New Hebrides)
Wood and fiber
L. 51 cm - W. 60 cm
Large, beautiful model of a Vanuatu outrigger pirogue, including two oars and a bailer. Particularly noteworthy are the quality of the ties holding the various hull components in place.
As Helène Guiot points out ("Pirogues d'Océanie", muséum d'Histoire naturelle de Toulouse, 2019), "the outrigger pirogue is characteristic of Austronesian populations (populations that extend from Southeast Asia, throughout the Pacific and as far as Madagascar). (...) It seems that this form of craft was the vector of the first inter-island voyages: due to its speed and greater lightness, it would have been preferentially used for voyages of exploration."
Condition report:
A few missing fasteners and minor breaks to some extremities.
Nice shiny patina
