This circular bowl in carved wood with a beautiful brown patina features engraved motifs on its outer rim. The Musée de l'Homme deposit number D 39 3 13 23, corresponding to the works collected during the Korrigane's voyage to the South Seas from 1934 to 1936, is inscribed in white ink between the feet of the bowl.
On return from the expedition, the collection was loaned to the Musée de l'Homme in Paris for exhibition, before being returned to the participants in the voyage.
The sculptural quality of the geometric motifs on this Admiralty bowl is particularly noteworthy. For a detailed study of bowls from the Admiralty Islands, please refer to Christian Kaufmann's reference study: Containers for Food and More: Bowls from the Admiralty Islands, Musée Barbier Mueller, Arts & Cultures, 2013, pp. 194-215.
