Garamut drum end decorated with a figure - Lot 47
Garamut drum end decorated with a figure Bas Sepik, Ramu region, Papua New Guinea Wood H 43.5 cm This figure of an ancestor with large eyes and a curved nose corresponds to the classic canons of representation in the Lower Sepik region (Ramu area). It adorned the end of a slotted drum. This ceremonial musical instrument, called garamut, was kept in the immediate vicinity of the House of Men. The sound of the instrument symbolized the voice of the ancestors, so it was both an incarnation and an acoustic representation of the mythical essence. Beautiful patina, heavy, dense wood.
