Provenance: according to its previous owner, this ornament was collected in 1968 by Geoff Carey, Sydney, Australia.
Ornamentation is central to the material culture of the New Guinea Highlands. Facial paintings, ceremonial headdresses and body ornaments form a major part of the art of this Upper Sepik region.
This mysterious head ornament is made from a combination of wood, fibers and feathers.
