BRETON André
THE LAMP IN THE CLOCK. Paris, Robert Marin, 1948. In-12, paperback. First edition. Bookplate of the bibliophile Alain Le Breton. Attached to the copy is an autograph card from André Breton to Alain Le Breton, dated August 25, 1950: Je connais bien La Coste (where a photograph of me reproduced in La lampe dans l'Horloge was taken). I went there with Pierre Guerre from Marseille, who must have written a poetic text about the place: that's why I gave it up myself (an image of the ruins appears on the frontispiece of a surrealist pamphlet: Rupture inaugurale). Gilbert Lély, as I recall, spoke at length about La Coste in his introduction to L'Aigle Mademoiselle. This puts me in a quandary in the presence of your proposal. But I'll think about it. Attached is an original photograph by Elisa Breton, signed by her (24 x 30 cm), showing André Breton kneeling in the park of La Coste, dear to the Marquis de Sade. This photograph is reproduced in La Lampe dans l'horloge.
