Histoire de Barlaam et de Josaphat, Roy des Indes, composée par sainct Jean Damascène. Paris, Guillaume Chaudière, 1574. In-8, modern vellum. First edition in French of this work formerly attributed to Saint John Damascene, which is in reality a Christianized version of the life of Buddha originally written in Sanskrit. The translation is by Jean de Billy, prior of the Carthusian monastery of Notre-Dame de Bonne-Espérance near the Château de Gaillon in the Eure department (Frère, t. I, p. 108). Early manuscript bookplate of a religious congregation on the title. Some light foxing.
