First edition of the French translation of this classic of Americanist literature. It is dedicated to the Marquis de Lafayette, Major General in the American troops. The author, a settler of Norman origin, describes life in the United States during the War of Independence in a picturesque way, giving details of the customs of the inhabitants, describing Canada, Acadia, etc., talking about whaling, denouncing slavery and the barbarity of the planters, etc. A fine copy, complete with errata. Small epidermis on covers.
