Paris, De l'Imprimerie de P. G. Le Mercier, 1740, large folio, marbled calf, fleur-de-lis lace around the boards with fleur-de-lis at the corners, gilded coat-of-arms in the center, spine decorated with fleur-de-lis, red title page, inner lace, gilded edges (period binding).

First edition of this superb festive book.
The illustrations include a vignette with the coat of arms of Paris on the title, engraved by Soubeyran after Edme Bouchardon, a large entablature by Jacques Rigaud depicting the jousting that took place on the Seine, and 13 plates engraved by Blondel, 8 of which are fold-outs: the spectacular view of the decorations, illuminations and fireworks of the festival held on the Seine on the evening of August 29, 1739 is famous in this respect.
Copy with the coat of arms of the city of Paris.
Large double-page plate, engraved by Cochin fils after Bonneval, added: Veue perspective de la décoration élevée sur la terrasse du château de Versailles pour l'illumination et le feu d'artifice qui a été tiré le 26 août 1739.
Small tear in lower margin of some plates and text pages. Two jaws cracked, covers crushed, slight scuffing on second board.
