FURETIÈRE (Antoine). - Lot 146
Frontispiece portrait of Furetière. Antoine Furetière (1619-1688), churchman, poet, fabulist, novelist and lexicographer, published numerous novels, fables and poems, which earned him admission to the Académie française in 1662. His battle against the Académie française led to his expulsion on January 22, 1685, following a resounding trial. He died before having the satisfaction of seeing his Dictionnaire published. This work, first published posthumously in 1690, has been considered a major work ever since. Joints restored.
