Tractatus de Natura Substantiae Energetica, seu de Vita Naturae, Ejusque Tribus primis Facultatibus. I. Perceptiva. II. Appetitiva. III. Motiva, & naturalis &c. London, E. Flescher, 1672. In-4, brown calf, double cold-stamped fillets on covers and spine, marbled edges (English binding of the period). First edition, with an attractive copper-engraved portrait of the author by Faithorne and 2 fold-out plates. Metaphysical treatise on the living or "energetic" nature of matter, by Francis Glisson (1599-1677), the great British anatomist and philosopher, considered a precursor of Leibniz on the subject: Leibniz's entire system is found here in germ: substances are considered as forces; these forces are self-sufficient, and drawing from their own fund all their modifications, are true monads (Franck, Dictionnaire des sciences philosophiques). Wide wetness at the beginning and end of the volume, part of plate n°I doubled (without missing the engraved subject). Binding rubbed, two spines split.
